Harvard Academy Scholars Program for International and Area Studies

Published

on

By

This program is open to all recent PhD recipients and doctoral candidates in the social sciences or law.

The Academy Scholars Program identifies and supports outstanding scholars at the start of their careers whose work combines disciplinary excellence in the social sciences or law with a command of the language and history or culture of countries or regions outside of the United States or Canada. Their scholarship may elucidate domestic, comparative, or transnational issues, past or present.

The Academy Scholars are a select community of individuals with resourcefulness, initiative, curiosity, and originality, whose work in cultures or regions outside of the US or Canada shows promise as a foundation for exceptional careers in major universities or international institutions.

Academy Scholars are appointed for a two-year, in-residence, postdoctoral fellowship at The Harvard Academy for International and Area Studies, Harvard University, Cambridge, MA. They receive substantial financial and research assistance to undertake sustained projects of research and/or acquire accessory training in their chosen fields and areas. The Senior Scholars, a distinguished group of senior Harvard University faculty members, act as mentors to the Academy Scholars to help them achieve their intellectual potential.

Eligibility

The competition for these awards is open only to recent PhD (or comparable professional school degree) recipients and doctoral candidates in the social sciences or law.

Those still pursuing a PhD should have completed their routine training and be well along in the writing of their theses before applying to become Academy Scholars. If you have completed a PhD program, the PhD completion date must be within three years of the October 1 application deadline. For applicants applying for the October 1, 2019 deadline, you must have completed your PhD or equivalent after September 30, 2016.

The Selection Committee considers all applicants in one applicant pool.

Terms

Each year, four to six Academy Scholars are named for two-year appointments. Academy Scholars are expected to reside in the Cambridge/Boston area for the duration of their appointments unless traveling for pre-approved research purposes.

Postdoctoral Academy Scholars will receive an annual stipend of $70,000. If selected before earning the PhD, the Scholars will receive an annual stipend of$31,000 until awarded the PhD. This stipend is supplemented by funding for conference and research travel, research assistants, and health insurance coverage. Some teaching is permitted but not required.

Applications are welcome from qualified persons without regard to nationality, gender, or race.

How to Apply

All application materials need to be submitted by the deadline of October 1. We do not accept late applications.

The completed application will include:

  1. Cover letter which succinctly states the applicant’s academic field, country or region of specialization, and proposed research topic
  2. Curriculum vitae (CV) or resumé; including list of publications
  3. Research proposal (2500 word maximum); including intellectual objectives and planned methodological and disciplinary work
  4. A copy of your PhD program transcript
  5. Three letters of recommendation (uploaded through the online application)

Letters should be addressed to the “Selection Committee.”
Letters of recommendation need to be uploaded by the deadline of October 1.

All parts of the application, including the three letters of recommendation, are submitted online as pdf documents. The online application is accessed through the homepage of The Harvard Academy’s website. To access the application, click on the APPLY ONLINE button.

Questions should be emailed to:
applicationinquiries@wcfia.harvard.edu.

You may include footnotes, endnotes, and/or bibliographies in your proposed research statement, but they are not required. If you do give references, they will not count towards the 2500-word maximum for the research statement.

We require no copies of published papers or abstracts as part of our application process. Do not include them in your application.

Regarding transcripts from foreign universities: our reviewers read many applications from those at foreign universities and request as much transcript-like official documentation as the Registrar at your university can provide, for all graduate work—both for the Master’s and PhD programs in which you have been or are currently enrolled. Your institution most likely gets these requests often and can provide the required paperwork to you upon request.

Peter Nicolaisen International Fellowships in Jefferson Studies

Published

By

Short-term fellowships are awarded for one or more months, and open to academics from any country, subject to selection by committee.  Successful applicants will be working on Jefferson-related projects. Priority is given to Jefferson-related projects using the Digital Archeological Archive of Comparative Slavery or Getting Word.

Fellows are expected to be in residence at the Robert H. Smith International Center for Jefferson Studies (ICJS), where they will have access to Monticello’s expert staff and research holdings at the Jefferson Library as well as those of the University of Virginia. During their residencies, fellows hold a 45 minute forum on their research projects.

The domestic fellowship awards (Batten and First Union) carry a stipend of $2,000 per month plus pre-approved travel costs for scholars from the United States and Canada. The Peter Nicolaisen International Fellowship (reserved for citizens of other countries living outside of the U.S. and Canada) provides $3,000 per month plus pre-approved travel costs. Residential accommodation may be available on a limited basis. Because ICJS is located in a rural setting with no public transportation, it is necessary for fellows to either rent a car, bring their own car, or make arrangements with a local cab company for transportation.

Applicants should submit a succinct description of the research project (500 words), a one-paragraph summary of the project, and a résumé. Two letters of reference should be emailed directly to the Center at the address below. Please include preferred dates of residence, keeping in mind that fellowships are awarded  by calendar month (i.e. 1st – 31st).  Application deadlines are November 1 and April 1. Fellowships are awarded for the following calendar year.

Please note: if you applied for a fellowship with us between June 26-July 29, 2017 we may not have received your application materials.  If you wish to inquire on the status of your application, please email ICJSFellowships@monticello.org.

Address all materials to:

Fellowship Committee
Robert H. Smith International Center for Jefferson Studies

ICJSfellowships@monticello.org

Telephone (434) 984-7500

Short-term fellowships are underwritten by endowments established for this purpose by the Batten Foundation and Wachovia Corporation (formerly First Union National Bank of Virginia).

Visiting Research Fellowships at Collegio Carlo Alberto, Turin

Published

on

By

Visiting Research Fellowships are being offered to PhD-holding junior and senior scholars for a period of one to twelve months. Scholars who have not received a Visiting Research Fellowship in the previous five years are especially encouraged to apply.

Visiting Fellows are expected to fully contribute to the exciting research life of the Collegio, by being in residence full-time at the Collegio, working on their research project(s), interacting scientifically with the Collegio’s scholars, and attending seminars and lectures. The fellowship does not carry any teaching or administrative responsibilities. However, if a Visiting Fellow is interested in teaching a mini course or a seminar course, this can be arranged by mutual agreement.

Recipients are offered the possibility of carrying out research on a subject of their choosing within the social sciences, in an environment that enables them to interact on a daily basis with faculty, research staff, and students.

The amount of each fellowship depends on the candidate’s curriculum and on the available budget. The Collegio covers the cost of an economy round-trip ticket from the place of residence of the Visiting Fellow, and provides logistical assistance in finding accommodation in Torino for the period of stay.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE

Interested candidates must submit their applications online using the link below. Applications should include a CV and a brief (1-2 page) research proposal indicating the requested period of stay at the Collegio. As a general rule, applications received will be evaluated twice a year: after September 15 (for visits starting no earlier than the following January) and after February 15 (for visits starting no earlier than the following September). A faster evaluation might be granted if the need arises.
